NDIS and Travel
The NDIS won’t fund your holiday expenses like travel, accommodation, or entertainment.
However, you might be able to claim some NDIS funding for support you need while on your trip. This will depend on the details of your NDIS plan and your individual circumstances, support and accessibility needs.
Here’s what you can potentially claim:
- Support worker assistance: If you require a support worker to accompany you on your trip, you can use your Core funding to cover their time. This funding only pays for their support, not their travel or accommodation costs. You’ll need to discuss and agree on how these additional costs will be covered beforehand. Make sure to document the agreed upon hours of support in a quote or service agreement.
- Assistive Technology
- Specific accommodation expenses
- Transport and additional baggage costs
To determine if and how much you can claim, it’s best to consult with:
- Supported Travel eXperiences (STX): They can help you explore what funding options might be available based on your NDIS plan and goals.
- Your Support Coordinator or Plan Manager: They can advise you on how your specific needs and plan can be incorporated into claiming for support during your trip.
Our team understands the complexities of using NDIS funding. We’ll guide you through the process and ensure your plans seamlessly integrate with your existing support network, collaborating with your support coordinators, plan managers, and service providers for a stress-free experience.
What is happening with Short Term Accommodation (STA)?
Note: The expected release of the updated operational guidelines in January 2025. Please refer to the official NDIS website for the most current information.
What is STA?
- STA is a support designed to provide a temporary break for both the NDIS participant and their informal carers (such as family members).
- It allows participants to stay in alternative accommodation for a short period, typically up to 14 days at a time, with a maximum of 28 days per year.
- The primary purpose is to support the ongoing care provided by informal carers.
What does STA cover?
- Accommodation: Costs associated with staying in a designated STA facility.
- Support: Assistance with self-care and community access while staying at the accommodation.
- Does NOT cover:
- Day-to-day living expenses (food, groceries)
- Travel costs to and from the accommodation
- Holiday expenses (cruises, theme parks, etc.)
- Items specifically excluded from NDIS funding (see the NDIS “Out” list)
How is STA funded?
- STA is funded within a participant’s core NDIS budget if it is deemed reasonable and necessary for their disability support needs.
- STA is usually funded in a group setting and needs NDIS approval or specifically stated in the plan for individual stays.
- It does not need to be explicitly stated in the participant’s plan.
- Funding is typically based on standard rates set by the NDIS.
Who can access STA?
- Primarily intended for participants who live with their informal carers.
- Not typically available for those living independently or in supported independent living arrangements.
Important Notes:
- The NDIS has specific rules and guidelines regarding STA.
- Participants should always discuss their STA needs with their support coordinator, LAC or planner to ensure they understand the rules and eligibility criteria.
- The NDIS “IN” and “OUT” lists clearly define what supports are eligible for funding.
- Participants can request exceptions for specific items or services through a “Replacement Support” process.
In essence, STA provides a valuable break for both participants and their informal support, enabling continued care and support within the NDIS framework.
