At Supported Travel eXperiences (STX), we believe in the transformative power of travel. Our travel advisors, with either lived experience or professional expertise in the disability sector, are more than trip planners; they are passionate advocates dedicated to creating unforgettable experiences and work alongside people with disabilities to explore the world. Today, we delve into the heart of what makes being an STX travel advisor so rewarding through the lens of Sam, one of our dedicated team members.
Exceeding Expectations: The Heart of Our Passion
Helping others is not just a job – it’s a calling. Sam shares, “Helping others is a passion, both at work and in my personal life. My greatest reward comes from exceeding client expectations. When a client returns from their trip with unforgettable memories and a desire to travel with us again, it’s incredibly validating. Their trust in my expertise, built on my professional skills and life experiences, fuels my dedication. Hearing their stories and seeing their travel photos brings me immense joy, knowing I played a role in making their dreams a reality or simply providing a blissful escape from daily routines.”
Going Above and Beyond: Crafting Inclusive Experiences
Creating life-changing experiences is at the core of our mission. Sam recalls,
“I recently organised a 7-day respite trip to Hamilton Island for her [a woman with disability]. This marked her first respite in a very long time, and understandably, she felt apprehensive about leaving home.
“To ensure a smooth experience, I also communicated with her support worker and coordinator while arranging the trip. She yearned to push boundaries and try new activities—things she never thought possible with her disability. Taking her desire to heart, I meticulously planned daily adventures, including snorkelling, jet skiing, fishing, massages, kayaking, and even quad biking.
“The trip proved to be an overwhelming success! They had an absolute blast, and upon returning, the client declared it the best trip they’d had in 20 years. Their immense gratitude for the opportunity to embrace new experiences was truly heartwarming.”
Addressing Concerns with Compassion and Clarity
We understand that potential travellers with disabilities often have specific concerns, particularly around the NDIA guidelines for Short Term Accommodation (STA). Many have received inaccurate information or dealt with unreliable travel agencies in the past. Sam explains,
“Understanding the NDIA guidelines for STAs is a common concern, especially for clients who may have received inaccurate information or dealt with unreliable travel agencies in the past. We prioritise transparency – we’ll guide you through the entire STA process, providing a clear breakdown of costs, including detailed information on what’s covered by NDIA and any potential out-of-pocket expenses.
“For clients’ convenience, we offer flexible communication options: video meetings, phone calls, or whatever works best for them. We boast extensive knowledge of the travel industry, and we stay current with all NDIA updates. We’re happy to collaborate with support coordinators, healthcare professionals, support workers, and any other stakeholders involved in ensuring a successful trip.”
Comprehensive Support: Beyond Basic Logistics
Our commitment goes beyond booking flights and accommodation. Making trips comfortable and accessible is our priority. Sam elaborates,
“We cater to a wide range of disabilities, offering equipment hire like electric hospital beds, commodes, hoists, and more. Working closely with equipment companies and hotels, we ensure everything is delivered, set up, and positioned precisely in your room. Even special bedding or extra pillows can be arranged. To best match your home environment, we’ll consult with you about the equipment you typically use.
“For accessible transportation, we partner with companies that understand your needs. We provide them with your wheelchair specifications to ensure a comfortable and seamless experience. Furthermore, we offer meet and greet services at airports and home pick-ups. Drivers will be informed of your requirements and prepared to offer any additional assistance you might need.
“For clients with sensory or psychosocial disabilities, we go the extra mile to find suitable accommodations. This might include blackout curtains, specialised lighting, braille signage, quiet rooms, or customised services and tours. We’ll research extensively to create a comfortable and enriching travel experience.”
Transforming Hesitation into Confidence
Last year, a senior client approached us with a unique challenge. He desired a local respite getaway but felt hesitant due to two factors: his beloved dogs and physical limitations. Additionally, his preferred location offered limited accessible options. Undeterred, Sam found a creative solution.
“I found a creative solution – an Airbnb with a private yard perfectly suited for his dogs! This not only addressed his concerns about their care but also provided a comfortable space for him to relax.
“The trip turned out to be a resounding success! He thoroughly enjoyed the experience, finding it both relaxing and fulfilling. This positive outcome is reflected in his subsequent bookings—a testament to his satisfaction. He has since entrusted us with organising a total of three additional STAs.”
The Joy of Making Dreams Come True
At STX, the most rewarding part as a travel advisor is seeing our clients’ joy and satisfaction. We are not just travel advisors; we are dream makers, dedicated to creating accessible and enriching STA, Respite and other travel experiences for everyone. Sam sums it up beautifully, “We are proud to be a part of their journeys, making their travel dreams come true.”
